Objective:

Foster scientific exchange and collaboration between PT and US researchers!

The Visiting Professor Program (VPP) is designed to foster collaboration between top-tier cancer researcher group leaders from Portugal and the USA. Each year, leading scientists from both nations participate in structured exchanges that enhance knowledge sharing, build sustainable research partnerships, and inspire innovation and grant applications in cancer research. These visits, lasting between 7 to 10 days, take place at premier research institutions across Portugal and the USA. The program also includes virtual seminars and workshops to maximize outreach and engagement and provide an opportunity for evaluation of trainees that can conduct collaborative research as a sabbatical in a leading US or PT laboratory. This program is strongly supported by FLAD.

Key Features:

The Portugal-USA Faculty Exchange brings 8-10 top researchers for 7-10 day visits, with local support and virtual seminars for broader access.

  • 7-10 day faculty exchanges between Portugal and the USA. 8-10 distinguished researchers/yr.
  • Host institutions will absorb some costs such as local transportation, meals and hotel accommodation and coordinate amongst local hosts to maximise exposure.
  • When possible, visits can also leverage other planned visits of candidates to the US/PT (lowering costs and contributing to carbon offset).
  • Virtual seminar component to expand accessibility.

Selection Process:

Open to recognized US and PT researchers.

  • Open to internationally recognized cancer researchers. Both self nominated or identified by the Institution.
  • Evaluated based on research excellence and collaboration potential.
  • Applications reviewed by the Working Group for the Visiting Professor Program.

Impact:

Strengthening networks and collaborations.

  • Strengthens scientific networks across the Atlantic.
  • Generates co-authored publications, funding applications, new research initiatives and identifies potential trainees for exchanges.
  • Establishes long-term partnerships between institutions.

Examples of Success Stories:

Dr. Carla Oliveira's Success Story

Dr. Carla Oliveira (I3S, Porto Portugal) is an expert in hereditary diffuse gastric cancer, studying their major genetic causes, as well as CDH1 gene regulation mechanisms. While she was in USA, she visited 3 different institutions in the East side: the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center at Columbia University and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, both in New York; as well as the University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. She stated the following: “The discussion with the Columbia University, Mount Sinai teams and U Penn teams was inspirational and rewarding. No efforts were needed to find common research interests and collaborations for the future in the area of gastric cancer genetics and cost-effectiveness studies in healthcare for hereditary gastric cancer”.

Professor M.McManus's Success Story

Professor M.McManus (UCSF, US) is an expert on gene expression regulation in cancer. He presented scientific seminars at Champalimaud Foundation, IMM, IGC (in Lisbon) and I3S in Porto. He did a small sabbatical at iMM hosted by Bruno Silva-Santos and organised several trainee workshops in the diverse Institutes. In his report, he refereed the following: “My mentorship extended beyond workshops and seminars. I engaged in one-on-one meetings with young researchers and faculty members, offering advice on research strategies and career development. These interactions were particularly rewarding, as they allowed me to contribute to the professional growth of the next generation of scientists.”
