Overview

The sabbatical program opens the opportunity to work in leading US cancer research institutions

The Research & Trainee Sabbaticals program provides early-career researchers and postdoctoral fellows with the opportunity to work in leading US cancer research institutions for up to a year in a collaborative project between their home and host laboratories. By integrating into established research groups, participants gain access to top world facilities, mentorship from top scientists, and exposure to innovative methodologies. This program contributes to scientific advancements, high-impact publications, joint grant proposals (NIH, EU) and establishes long-term international collaborations. Each year, up to 10 projects or trainees will be selected to conduct research in top US laboratories, generating preliminary data for larger NIH and EU grants and providing transformational career experiences for Portuguese trainees.

Program Structure:

Annually, 10 fully funded 6–12 month placements at top U.S. institutions support tumor biology research, covering lab and trainee expenses.

  • 10x 6 to 12-month placements/yr at top-tier US institutions.
  • Fully funded, covering travel, visa, up to 100K for the lab, plus up to 25K for the trainee (housing and living costs). The host institution in PT will continue to pay the normal salary of the trainee. Host institutions in the US may complement, providing additional funds to the lab for the project. No overhead costs will be charged by the host institution.
  • Research focus include all areas of tumor biology research.

Eligibility & Application Guidelines:

Open to PhD students, postdocs, and junior faculty, with selection based on excellence and impact.

Open to PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and junior faculty. An application form, approved by the working group, provides a summary of the one-year collaborative project, the trainee CV, letter of recommendation, mentor endorsement, and institutional approval.

Following the sabbatical, the trainee will return to the PT lab to ensure transmission of newly acquired expertise. Selection is made by Adopt-A-Scientist Advisory Board based on academic and research excellence, and potential for important breakthroughs and enriching learning experiences. Scientists in this board cannot make decisions regarding proposals from their laboratory or from their own institution or collaborators.

Finally, the working group will conduct a 6-month check-in to ensure that the proposed project is underway, and the trainee experience is positive prior to releasing the second half of the funds. A contractual letter will be executed by the users/beneficiaries from the program.
